Wood Fired Worcester

This experience happened on a Sunday, so we’ll have to call it Surprise Sunday! Don’t worry, we still followed this up with a Mystery Monday so we got to play a double header for the week.

We had plans to travel to Worcester, MA to see our son play baseball and decided to head out a few hours early and hit a pizza joint we heard a lot about. Located in the heart of the downtown area, Volturno is a new wood fired pizza joint that has that new open restaurant design with the classic wood fired pizza menu… a single page with limited entries.

We started out by trying their polpette with fettuna which is meatballs served with grilled bread and olive oil. This was very good, almost a meal to itself for one person. As filling as it was, we polished it off in good fashion and prepared for what we were hoping would be a couple of good pies. We were not disappointed.

The pizza here is exceptional, if you’re into that sort of thing. We ordered two pies, the Margherita Dop and the Calabrese. Yum, yum…  The Calabrese is a white pizza with a penna base and had the right amount of sausage and scallion. Being a simple pie, the Margherita relies a lot on the flavor of the dough and this one was delicious. The dough was spot on for us, a great flavor and the right amount of fluff with the right amount of charred bottom. Frankly, this pizza dough is the one that most closely resembles the pie we make at home so I guess we would be a little partial! Did I mention we paired this meal with a couple of Blue Moon’s?  Of course we did.

Volturno is exactly what we look for in a quality pizza joint and it was well worth the stop to experience what they have to offer. Any time we pass through Worcester we will definitely plan to stop again.
