Pizza party on the Hudson

Rail Trail Header

The day was a little chilly and had a slight breeze but there was no rain in the forecast so we were a go for launch. We visited Hudson, MA because we were interested in looking at the rail trail they had going through the town.

This choice was Ralph’s and it focused on, what else, pizza! The restaurant is called Rail Trail Flatbread Co. and it’s located in the town center. We got there around 1:30 and walked into a warm cozy place with an open kitchen where booth seating can watch the entire operation. The focal point is a large wood fired oven that throws off a lot of heat into the seating area.

We ordered a couple of Blue Moons and started off with their OG wings and a cup of their chili (which are all huge surprises! NOT)… The wings were brined and fried and were fabulous. The chili wasn’t Ralph’s favorite since it wasn’t chunky but it was good just the same. As we discovered, the menu is true farm to table and everything is sourced locally if possible. They also rotate the menu in and out seasonally so there are changes taking place every four months or so. As it happened we were there at the tail end of the winter menu and one of our orders will not be seen for quite some time.

I ordered the chicken parm flatbread pizza and Ralph ordered the BELT, the bacon, egg, lettuce, and tomato flatbread pizza. The chicken parm was really good with a red sauce and good chunks of breaded chicken. This pizza has a great taste and is heavy and filling. As good as it was, the chicken parm couldn’t compare to the BELT which may be the single best pizza we’ve ever had. This pizza was phenomenal in every way and was a perfect blend of flavors, a breakfast feast if there ever was one. The over easy eggs were sitting on a bed of arugula bed and were surrounded by cherry tomatoes. The cheese had bacon mixed in and the combination was to die for. All in all, the flatbread dough was new to us and we were skeptical on how it would compare to a traditional Neapolitan style dough. We were pleasantly surprised at how good its flavor was and how it held up as a nice crispy pizza base. Their pizza is flat out good, pun intended…

The open kitchen with the oven open to us made for a great day and we couldn’t have been happier with the choice that made our Mystery Monday a great experience. To top it off, we learned the owners of Rail Trail Flatbread also own the ice cream shop across the street and truthfully, every aspect of the shoppe was first rate and the ice cream was some of the best natural ice cream we’ve ever had. I had a mint chocolate chip and the mint was garden fresh, adding that unmistakable flavor to the ice cream like I’ve never had before.
